Bohemian Fashion Essentials: The Kimono

Bohemian Fashion Essentials: The Kimono

There's no easy way to define bohemian style and no straightforward rules, but there are certain pieces that will make any outfit bohemian. We've already written about the maxi dress and the playsuit/romper - this week, it's the turn of the kimono.

Sometimes known as a kimono jacket or kimono robe, this garment has been a bohemian staple since Stevie Nicks wore them in the 1970's. In the last few years, they have enjoyed a huge rise in popularity. Today, they are one of the key pieces in bohemian style and an easy way to make even a t-shirt and jeans look glamorously boho in seconds. Their loose, casual shape is easily thrown on over anything from an evening dress to a turtleneck sweater and looks just as great on all body sizes and shapes.

Basically, a kimono is an unfitted jacket in a square, boxy shape, with similarly boxy sleeves. The shape is loosely inspired by traditional Japanese kimonos, but the bohemian Western version is far looser and more flowing.

Want to choose the very best kimono for your bohemian wardrobe? Here are some tips:

Look for amazing prints and patterns

The very best bohemian kimonos have amazing, eye-catching prints in rich, glowing colors. Coral pinks and turquoise blues seem to be especially popular, but all kinds of colors can look beautiful. The type of print is up to you! The all-over floral print on our Day Tripper Kimono is perfect for a casual bohemian outfit, especially on the beach. The bulls skull print on our Buffalo Goddess kimono, on the other hand, is tough and sexy-cool.

Try fringing

Not all kimonos have fringing, but it can add an incredible touch of hippie glamour to any outfit. It was fringed kimonos that Stevie Nicks made so famous and they still look exotic and exciting today. You can try anything from floor-sweeping fringe to a tiny touch on the sleeves.

Wear it with something simple

Of course, there's no reason not to wear your kimono with a stunning floor-length evening dress. But they are a fantastic way to add bohemian glamour in everyday life, without looking over the top. Try your kimono with denim shorts and a t-shirt, or perhaps jeans and a fitted sweater on a cool evening. A kimono is incredibly comfortable and easy to wear but can still turn any outfit into something beautiful.

Experiment with length

A lot of kimonos are roughly hip length, but try experimenting with different lengths. A cropped waist-length kimono looks cute with shorts on a summer day. A long, floor-sweeping duster kimono is boho glamour at its best.

Try different textures

For even more variety, look for kimonos with different textures. Velvet looks great, either in burnout prints for summer or in heavier fabrics for winter. Another great texture to try is lace, which makes incredible delicate kimonos that look beautiful over slip dresses. Crochet kimonos are perfect for the beach, while sequin and beading details are perfect for nights out or just everyday glamour.
